When Luxco, of St. Louis, Missouri decided on a brand refresh for its David Nicholson 1843® Kentucky Straight Bourbon Straight Whiskey and to launch its David Nicholson Reserve® Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey, it called upon Saxco International, LLC, of Horsham, PA, to assist with the all-important packaging aspects of the project. Saxco International with its vast global resource network is a long-time world-wide packaging specialist for the wine, spirits, beer and food industries.
The brand, dating back to 1843 and an integral part of Luxco’s portfolio of whiskeys since 2000, will continue to provide 100 proof ultra-premium bourbon in an updated sleeker, upscale package for both spirits. “Our role was to help create a package with a refreshing overall vibrant appearance with bold eye catching appeal and a standout shelf appearance,” relates Jason Craig, regional sales manager for Saxco International, LLC., who coordinated the project for Saxco. “We completed our part of the project within the required time and budgetary parameters.”
Working closely with Luxco’s brand manager Fletcher Buchman and its new product development team, Saxco managed the new bottle development process to source and manufacture a sleeker and more contemporary 750 ML quality flint bottle with a long neck, thick flat bottom and a custom embossment on its sloping shoulders from one of its quality and reliable overseas supply sources in its global resource network. The bottle is being used for both variants of the David Nicholson bourbon whiskeys.
Saxco additionally provided the new design custom cork assembly composed of a natural wood colored top and a custom cork with the Nicholson logo wrapped around it from a long-time quality supply partner in Portugal. The cork assembly was over-fitted with PVC capsules and completed by a Saxco vendor in California. For the 1843 bourbon the capsule was white with black lettering and for the new Reserve bourbon it was black with white lettering.
The bottle’s custom pressure sensitive labels were designed by CFx Graphics and were applied by a Luxco source. “The brand’s packaging with its new bottle, natural cork and embossing on the shoulder now more closely reflects the award-winning bourbon inside,” states Buchman. “Both the David Nicholson 1843® Straight Bourbon Whiskey and the David Nicholson Reserve® Straight Bourbon Whiskey are being targeted to the bourbon connoisseur who enjoys a taste for ultra-premium American whiskey.
David Nicholson 1843 is still made according to the original recipe and features a smooth wheated Kentucky Straight Bourbon Whiskey with hints of vanilla and oak. For Nicholson Reserve, with a rye mash bill, there’s a more complex, toasted rich robust flavor and a spicier bourbon. Both are 100-proof and 50-percent alcohol by volume The suggested retail price for the 1843 Kentucky Straight Bourbon in the 750 ML size is $29.99, while the Nicholson Reserve Straight Bourbon is $39.99 for the 750 ML size (both U.S. dollars). The Nicholson bourbons are being distributed mainly in Missouri and Illinois, however, a nationwide rollout is underway.
